CHAWAMA’S CLEAR MESSAGE: ONLY OPPOSITION UNITY CAN UNMASK A POLISHED BUT FRAGILE REGIME

President Hakainde Hichilema continues to stand out as a leader marked by discipline, focus, and political maturity. His administration has stabilised the country, restored international confidence, and kept the economy on a recovery path despite prolonged climate related shocks and difficult governing conditions. The cohesion and organisation of the ruling party under his leadership clearly illustrate the strength of incumbency and the effectiveness of structured governance.

Within this broader strength, the Chawama by election revealed underlying pressures that require attention. Public remarks by the Deputy Secretary General on funding constraints and the strain placed on foot soldiers point to internal stresses that can emerge even in a dominant political organisation. The Chawama outcome therefore reinforces a central truth, unity is not assumed, it must be constantly nurtured and maintained.

At the same time, Chawama offered a practical demonstration of what cooperation can achieve on the opposition side. By working together, opposition forces were able to alter the electoral trajectory in a contest of high interest to the ruling party. This outcome reaffirmed that collective action, when properly coordinated, can translate into tangible political impact.

From this reality flows an unavoidable conclusion for the opposition. Any political party or individual candidate pursuing a solitary path against President Hichilema in 2026 will merely divide the vote and weaken the prospect of meaningful competition. Collaboration, dialogue, and negotiated consensus are not signs of weakness, they are strategic necessities if a credible alternative is to emerge.

Looking ahead, the direction is evident. With a fragmented and disorganised opposition, the advantage remains firmly with President Hichilema and the ruling party. Only a united, disciplined, and purpose driven opposition can alter this trajectory. Chawama therefore stands not just as an event, but as a guide, unity shapes outcomes, and politics ultimately favours those who recognise reality and act accordingly.
