I have taken time to read the MOU by Miles Sampa, and I must be honest, I have seen political MOUs before, but I have never seen anything like this. I am still in shock. It is difficult to understand how leaders can claim to care about Zambia and its people, yet commit to agreements that would leave any President weak, compromised, and vulnerable.
What worries me most is that this MOU carries the characteristics of political capture, a situation where power is controlled by a small group for their own benefit. And as Zambians, this is one element we must firmly reject. When a President becomes politically captured, their policies will never truly serve the citizens. Decisions stop being national and instead become instructions from those who hold the hidden influence.
This kind of arrangement is something you would expect from external interference, similar to how certain international actors have influenced politics elsewhere, like the controversies that unfolded in Venezuela during the Trump era. That is why this MOU is deeply concerning: it mirrors the same pattern of a leader being boxed in by forces that do not represent the will of the people.
Zambia is now in a dangerous phase. The monopoly of power we are beginning to witness, the lack of accountability, and the growing culture of leaders putting themselves above the nation, these are the very issues we must confront.
Today should be a wake-up call. Zambians can now clearly see the path ahead. We either allow a few individuals to dominate the nation for their own interests, or we rise and choose the path that protects our people and our democracy.
This is the moment to put Zambia first, before personalities, before factions, and before the ambitions of a few.
