THE SPEAKER MUST STOP ACTING LIKE A UPND SPOKESPERSON

31/10/2025

Zambians are now wide awake. Every day that Parliament sits, it becomes clearer that the current Speaker, Madam Mutti, has abandoned her constitutional duty to remain neutral and has instead chosen to act as a spokesperson for the UPND government.

Since taking office, the Speaker has never admitted or acknowledged any matter raised by opposition Members of Parliament on the floor of the House. Every time opposition MPs try to speak for the people, she blocks them and shields the government from accountability. This is not leadership; it is a betrayal of democracy.

It is shocking that Madam Speaker, who always dismisses information from social media, is today willing to accept so-called evidence captured on smartphones simply because it favors the government. When information comes from citizens or the opposition, she calls it propaganda. But when it serves the UPND narrative, suddenly it becomes credible. This double standard is unacceptable.

We cannot remain silent when the Speaker is ready to admit all the nonsense coming from the government benches yet refuses to hear the genuine cries of the people represented by the opposition. Parliament must never become a one-party platform.

The issue of voter registration is a serious national matter. It must be handled with patriotism, not politics. Millions of Zambians, especially those in Northern, Luapula, Muchinga, Eastern, and other regions, are struggling to obtain NRCs and register as voters, while other regions are being given full attention. Ignoring this inequality is not only unfair; it is a direct assault on democracy itself.

By dismissing the concerns raised by Hon. Stephen Kampyongo, the Speaker has shown that she is willing to side with those who want to silence the truth. But let it be known that the people are watching. The cries from the villages, the towns, and the streets will not be silenced forever.

Come 2026, no office will be too big and no position too powerful to protect those who have used authority to suppress the voices of Zambians.

The arrogance and bias we see in Madam Mutti are turning the National Assembly into a UPND branch office. Institutions that once served the people have now been captured, but the spirit of the people cannot be captured.

Zambia belongs to all of us, not to a few in power. The people’s voices will prevail.
